The pest control industry is a highly sought after sector in business brokerage. There are many reasons for this, but the main one is the buyers love the recurring revenue model that the companies enjoy.
Plus, as climate change and shifting weather patterns affect both people and the pests they try to live without in their residences and businesses. These include the large variety of insects and rodents that most pest control businesses handle on a regular basis.
With no end to pest infestations in sight and a growing residential real estate market, buyers and sellers of pest control businesses can likely plan on a robust company transaction environment now and in the future.
Five key trends are currently fueling pest control businesses, a representative of The Steritech Group told pest control industry trade publication PCT Magazine. "These trends are not only current," says the leading provider of commercial pest prevention services in the U.S. and Canada, "but they will last far into the future as well."
The trends in the pest control business are:
Bed Bug Incidents in Non-Traditional Locations - Steritech has seen a 16.1% increase in bed bug business outside of hotels over the past year. They are appearing now in places like health-care facilities, retail stores, movie theaters, food plant and warehouse locker rooms, public transportation and libraries around the U.S. and Canada.
Proliferating Roof Rats - Although this rodent used to appear primarily on the coastlines of the Southeastern U.S., it is now being encountered more frequently in land-locked areas.
Invasive Ant Species - An increasing number of non-native ant species have been discovered in the United States over the past several years, and these pests are gaining ground in many areas.
Expanding Reach of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug - In the past five years, the brown marmorated stink bug has exploded as a nuisance pest in the Eastern U.S. It is also a threat to agricultural businesses.
Lighting Design for Pest Prevention - Although LED lighting is considered more environmentally friendly, research shows that LED light emissions less than 550 nanometers may be more attractive to pests than those with higher wavelengths. Once attracted, pests will try to gain entry to buildings.
